The Joy Harland Memorial Photographic Competition is open to all members of the Horticultural Media Association Australia nationwide and is conducted bi-annually, by HMA Victoria Inc.
The first prize winner will receive $200 plus a trophy. In addition $100 will be offered for two highly commended works.
Held every two years, the competition commemorates the work and talent of photographer, the late Joy Harland. Joy was a member of HMA Victoria and is best remembered for her excellence in horticultural photography.
The photographs entered in this competition are a source of quality cover shots for the HMA News. But as well as being cover shots, the images might be used for other purposes such as on the HMAA website and social media (with credits) but will not used for commercial purposes.
While it’s important that the subject of your image is about horticulture, landscapes and gardening, don’t limit your photos to flowers. You might want to focus on foliage, fruits, vegetables or even the roots of plants. Think about beautiful gardens or landscapes or try to capture all elements of nature in your shot. Look around at green spaces in our cities. Think about seasons.
The HMA News comes out quarterly. Really push the envelope and be innovative and creative in your photographs. If you want some tips on to taking garden shots, read Simon Griffith’s Masterclass on our website.
